The shutters didn’t fully cut out the bright light for the projector screen and one inventive student used drawings in the studio to hold the shutters together –it worked a treat......
This idea started in Alghero, Sardinia when I was teaching on the Master Mediterranean Landscape Urbanism at Università degli Studi di Sassari.

Catalonian influence in Italy..........
I landed in Alghero on Sardinia to discover that the city’s close connections are with Catalonia, rather than Italy. The old town is affectionately known as Barcelonetta and the food has influences from both countries. I knew little of the history or traditions of this attractive historic coastal city until going to teach a module of the Master Mediterranean Landscape Urbanism at Università degli Studi di Sassari. Great experience, several of the students spoke fantastic English and supported those who didn’t. All the students work and spend their Fridays and Saturdays at the University. We worked hard..........

We worked hard and it was a great experience.
On Sunday 23rd May I was invited by Matteo and Roberta to join them and the crowd at La Cavalcata Sarda in Sassari. A parade originated in 1899 full of the culture and heritage of the island and the settlements within it. There are displays of the heritage and folklore of the villages and amazingly beautifully coloured clothes embellished made from wool and linen with filigree jewellery and buttons characteristic of the island. The rich vibrant colours of the dresses are distinct to each village, the outfits are very expensive and are handed down from mother to daughter.
The Sardinian Carnival mask known as the Mamuthones Mamoiada has been used as a disguise both for ceremonial occasions and criminal acts. There is an acting out of the dominance of man over the’wild beasts’ and beautiful horses paraded in the streets, a couple galloping down potentially causing mayhem.
We sat under trees and I watched the crowd on the other side of the road. I knew I wasn’t in the UK and realised that no one was eating and drinking, there were no food vans down the side of the road and there’s very little obesity. After the parade we ate traditional food –bbqed eel and freshwater fish and spit roast young pig. We watched the horse racing and acrobatics at the racecourse and after visiting the museum we then saw the stage show –dancing, singing and playing the launeddas a triple piped woodwind instrument apparently played with a similar breathing to the bagpipes. Sardinian singing has one of the oldest forms of vocal polyphony, known as Canto a Tenores which have influenced Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel and echoed around the square.
An amazing day and a great experience – thank you.
In contrast, a couple of days cycling on the north west corner on my own – very quiet and beautiful scenery, I had wanted to cycle in Sardinia for a long time and it was great. Passing the historic Nurange site to the north of Alghero and on to the Capo Caccia with its caves in the limestone and amazing colonies of birds including peregrine falcons in large numbers I saw few people and even fewer places to buy water the bikes are cheap to hire –about €9 a day for a great sense of freedom.

A fast wooden boat originally built in the time before motors, when speed meant money for the pilots on their race out to sea to meet their clients. Crewed by only the skipper and a mate this four sailed boat is based over this summer on the beautiful west coast of Scotland. We left from Largs in a boat built this century which has an engine and sailed in the Clyde, around Arran and also to Northern Ireland arriving on the Saturday evening just in time to watch some of the first England World Cup match in the local pub..........

We left from Largs in a boat built this century which has an engine and sailed in the Clyde, around Arran and also to Northern Ireland arriving on the Saturday evening just in time to watch some of the first England World Cup match in the local pub in Glen Arm. Islands and peninsulas including one made famous by Paul McCartney came and went and we were lucky enough to have sunny weather, wind and the chance to land at Ailsa Craig, where climbing to the top gave wonderful 360° views. All the exercise was well rewarded by marvellous food supplied by Laurie our skipper who with his wife had owned and run a Michelin starred restaurant –how lucky were we?

She is a captivating presenter, speaking for an hour and a half with energy, engagement and humour. She spoke of the need for coaching and mentoring to help people find the means to become who they truly want to be.
Credibility is important in business and people are invited to be sceptical as a means to provide a starting place in which they bring everything to the table. Shelle has developed the LAB profile based on the work of Roger Bailey which considers behavioural working traits.
She talked of meeting people at their own starting place or bus stop and the Power Principles which she described as “everything you do affects the emotional states of the other person and determines what your customer thinks of your organisation.”
The range of natural behavioural preferences means that for an organisation to take along its employees considering the variety assists in reaching goals more successfully. Language use gives clues to an individual’s preferences.
